what is the origin of the game of roulette?

The game of Roulette has been around for centuries, and its exact origin is unknown. While it is believed to have originated in France in the 18th century, it is unclear whether the game was actually first devised in France or if it evolved from a similar game already in existence elsewhere.

One popular theory credits french Monk, Blaise Pascal, as the inventor of roulette. Pascal was a 17th Century polymath who developed a primitive form of the roulette wheel in an attempt to create a perpetual motion machine - a device that could operate without an external source of energy. Although his device never actually worked, he created a number of designs for various versions of the roulette wheel that still exist today.

Another theory suggests that the roulette wheel originated from an old Chinese dice game called 'Kai Bau', or 'Gambling Pigeons'. This dice game was similar in structure to Roulette and involved two dice, with players betting on which number would come up when they were thrown together.

The earliest documented mention of the roulette wheel is believed to be contained within Jacques Lablee's novel La Roulette ou le Jour (1796). The book contains descriptions of games similar to modern day roulette but instead uses precious stones rather than numbers on the wheel.
